Free Resources

Who does not like free stuff? Well, the good news is that there are tons of free stuff for leaning Spanish on the net. Here you will find list of my favorite free Spanish resources including my favorite dicitionary, pronuciation guide, grammar guide, and online translators. All these resourse are pretty straight forward, nicely laid out, and very easy to use. Now, you still may want to take a course or use learn-at-home program, but these sources can be used in addition to any Spanish language training.

Online Dictionary

Word Reference.comWord Reference is a must for the Spanish language learner. Word Reference is a fantastic dictionary and the only one you will ever need, but perhaps its greatest feature is the online language forum. Here, you can meet, talk, and ask questions to native Spanish speakers. This is handy if you need help with a certain translation or need something in English translated perfectly into Spanish.

Pronunciation Guides

Study SpanishThe two pronunciation guides I recommend come from Rocket Spanish and Study Spanish. Pronunciation is very important in Spanish as the vowels and many of the constants are pronounced very differently than they are in English. Now, both pronunciation guides are very similar, with the main difference being that the creator of Rocket Spanish is from Chile, and he pronounces just a few of the consonants slightly different.

Grammar Guides

Rocket SpanishThe sources for my two favorite guides are the same sources for my Pronunciation guides: Rocket Spanish and Study Spanish. Rocket Spanish is little more informal while Study Spanish is a little more text book. I like both, and recommend them highly. Now just a few words of advice, do not get too caught up with grammar when you are first starting out, because it will probably slow you down and give you fits. Don’t worry the grammar will come in time.

Online Translators

Im translatorOnline translators can be useful tools, but I should warn you that, there is not a perfect online translator out there. Translator tend to translate more literally, and sometimes Spanish does not literally translate into English very well and vise versa. Translators, however, can give you a close approximation of what is being said. My favorite online translator is the im translator. In my humble opinion, I think it translates the best out of all online translators. You can also try babelfish from Altavista. Just a reminder, if you need to get exact translation of something, you may want to use the language forums at Wordreference.
